If you’re unable to avoid working at height and cannot work from an existing safe place, then the HSE recommends collective protection such as rooftop guardrails and edge protection to protect workers on the roof.
By installing a rooftop guardrail, you will protect anyone who has to go onto your roof without the need for training or rescue procedures. But deciding what type of guardrail can be tricky.
How to select the correct type of guardrail system
There are a few factors you need to consider when selecting a guardrail system. For example, what type of roof do you have? Is your building listed? Do you want the edge protection system to be visible from the ground, and what happens if you don’t have room for a guardrail system?
Freestanding guardrail systems
When you don’t want a system fixed to your roof, freestanding systems offer the best form of collective protection. These systems are counterbalanced and designed for use on any flat roof and can be vertical, raked, radiused and even collapsible
Collapsible freestanding guardrails
As the name suggests, you can fold these systems down so they’re not visible from the ground, making them the ideal choice when the building’s aesthetics are a concern. The counterbalanced system provides secure edge protection when work is in progress. It then easily folds down once the job is finished.
Fixed railings
Of course, there can be instances when a freestanding guardrail isn’t possible. For example, when the parapet isn’t high enough or you don’t have enough space for a freestanding guardrail. And you may not even want a system on your roof.
This is where fixed systems come into play. To provide permanent roof safety, you can fix railings onto the parapet’s top or side.
